The Environment
We see our commitment to the environment as an integral part of our Social Licence to Operate. This compact between the local community and the mine operators helps us ensure the long-term economic viability of the project in an environmentally sustainable manner that benefits all.
Capitalising on our extensive involvement in environmental sustainability, we have developed considerable expertise that enables us to keep our environmental impact to a minimum. Some of our environmental initiatives specific to the Boddington Gold Mine include:
Greenhouse Emissions: To minimise and offset greenhouse emissions caused by the significant power usage required of the mine, we are investing in extensive revegetation programs, a wind farm, research and development projects, and adopting the use of new, more environmentally friendly technologies.
Waste Disposal: Through extensive modelling and research of the waste dump construction, we have designed a waste dump that will ensure dumps are stable in the long term and safe under both normal and earthquake conditions.
Cyanide Levels: To ensure safe management of cyanide, we are using state-of-the-art technology that will keep levels well below those approved under the original project design.
Water Recycling: In order to minimise water use from the nearby Hotham River, we will be recycling water used in the gold extraction process.
